Laguna Beach Highlights
Laguna Beach, with its 30 public beaches,
6 miles of coastline, and hidden coves, is the quintessential classic
southern California beach town. Nestled next to the coastal mountains,
it’s a welcome break from the busy pace of theme parks and
freeways. But Laguna Beach is more than its lush tropical gardens
of hibiscus and bougainvillea; entertaining guests has been a way
of life here since the early days of Hollywood. A cultural and arts
center, Laguna Beach also features multiple art galleries and is
host to many art events.
You can cruise Laguna Beach on foot to visit
Main Beach, Heisler Park, the Laguna Art Museum, and loads of restaurants,
shops, and galleries. Or drive up Laguna Canyon Road to the Laguna
Playhouse, Pageant of the Masters, and three art venues. The surrounding
coastal hills offer plenty of opportunities to hike, bike, and observe
the area’s flora and fauna.
Laguna Beach Activities
Water Sports. Surfing is big in Laguna Beach. Surfing-only beaches include Brooks Street, Thalia, and Rockpile. Body surfers love Thousand Steps Beach in South Laguna between 9th and 10th Streets; you get plenty of exercise on the steep stairs but it is worth it. The big waves at Crescent Bay, a popular diving and fishing spot, draw body surfers and skim boarders. Sea kayaking is also very popular, and you can rent boats in town. The Laguna Beach coastline also features good spots for snorkeling and some of the best deep-sea diving in North America. And don’t forget the miles of soft sandy beach for swimming.
Mission Tours. If early
California history intrigues you, take a tour of Mission San Juan
Capistrano. Set amid 10 acres, this beautifully preserved 200-year-old
site features an oasis of lush gardens and splashing fountains.
The Mission website details current religious and historical
events and festivals.
Shopping. Shopping opportunities abound in Laguna Beach for one-of-a-kind treasures in jewelry, antiques, and clothing. A favorite stop is quaint Peppertree Lane at 448 South Coast Highway (look for the arched brick entries).
